ST. LOUIS, Missouri — Rebecca Caroline “Becky” Thompson, a physicist, science educator, author and accomplished endurance athlete who helped bring science closer to the public, has died at the age of 47.

Thompson, vice president of science and education at the Saint Louis Science Center, died after suffering cardiac arrest during an attempt to swim the Catalina Channel off Southern California on July 31.

Her death brought together two very different parts of the life she had built: a career devoted to helping people understand science and a personal passion for pushing herself through some of the world’s most demanding endurance challenges.

For colleagues, students, science enthusiasts and the many people who knew her personally, Thompson leaves behind a remarkable record of work, curiosity and determination.

A Career Built Around Making Science Accessible

When Thompson joined the Saint Louis Science Center in 2024, she brought with her more than two decades of experience in science education, public engagement and outreach.

Thompson’s interest in communicating science also extended to writing.

She was the author of several books, including Fire, Ice, and Physics: The Science of Game of Thrones, bringing scientific ideas into a world better known for fantasy, dragons and epic battles.

That ability to connect scientific concepts with popular culture reflected the same philosophy that characterized much of her professional career.
