ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI — A fatal incident on Interstate 55 early Monday morning, August 24, 2026, has developed into a homicide investigation after St. Louis police discovered a second deceased man at a nearby residence.

What initially appeared to be a deadly pedestrian incident on I-55 led investigators from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department to a home in the city’s Soulard neighborhood, where they found another man dead. Police have identified that man as Aaron Hutchings.

Authorities are investigating the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide, although the investigation remains active and detectives have not released a complete account of what happened.

Fatal I-55 Incident Leads Police to Nearby Home

Police responded shortly before 5 a.m. Monday to northbound I-55 near the Arsenal Street exit after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck by vehicles.

An adult male was found deceased on the interstate.

Members of the department’s Accident Reconstruction Unit began examining the circumstances surrounding the man’s presence on the highway. During the investigation, detectives developed information indicating that he may have come from the nearby Utah Street overpass.

Investigators examined the bridge and found evidence on the railing above the northbound lanes. Police also began reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with people in the surrounding area.

The investigation subsequently led officers to a residence in the 3300 block of South Ninth Street in Soulard.

Aaron Hutchings Found Dead

While investigating the circumstances surrounding the I-55 death, officers noticed that a door at the South Ninth Street residence was open.

Police reported seeing evidence indicating that a person had died inside the home. Officers entered the residence and discovered Aaron Hutchings, a man in his 40s, deceased.

A knife was also reportedly recovered inside the residence as investigators processed the scene.

The discovery prompted homicide detectives to join the investigation as authorities began working to determine whether the two deaths were connected.

Police Investigate Connection Between the Two Deaths

According to preliminary information released by investigators, surveillance footage helped establish a possible connection between the South Ninth Street residence and the man who was later found on I-55.

Investigators believe the two men knew one another and were in a relationship.

Police identified Hutchings as the man found deceased inside the residence. The other man’s identity has not been publicly established in the information available for this report.

Detectives are now working to reconstruct the events that occurred before the interstate incident and determine what led to both deaths.

Authorities have characterized the case as an apparent murder-suicide, but the investigation is not yet complete. The designation remains subject to the findings of homicide detectives and other investigators examining the evidence.

Investigation Continues in St. Louis

Several investigative units have been involved as police work to establish a complete timeline.

Surveillance video, physical evidence, witness accounts and evidence recovered from the residence are expected to play a role in determining what happened.

Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the man’s movement from the South Ninth Street area toward the Utah Street overpass and ultimately onto I-55.

At this stage, authorities have not publicly released every detail concerning the deaths, including a complete account of what happened inside the residence or the precise circumstances that led to the interstate incident.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is asking anyone who may have information about the case to contact the SLMPD Homicide Division at 314-444-5371.
